Canonica’s OT winner leads Cataractes to 4-3 win over Olympiques

SHAWINIGAN, Que. – Lorenzo Canonica scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Shawinigan Cataractes to a 4-3 win over the Gatineau Olympiques Thursday.

The Cataractes jumped out to an early 3-0 edge behind power-play goals from Evan Courtois and Isaac Ménard. William Veillette opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the game.

Late in the second period, Gatineau turned the tide of the game.

After Joey Vetrano scored with just over three minutes remaining in the period, the Olympiques further cut into the deficit in the third period. Jacob Renaud-Viau scored at the 8:39 mark before Vetrano scored his second of the night at 11:33 to tie the game up.

But at the 2:31 mark in overtime, Canonica put an end to any hopes of a comeback with a goal of his own on Shawinigan’s lone shot on goal in the extra period.

Remi Delafontaine saved 28 shots in the victory. Emerik Despatie stopped 22 in a losing effort.
