Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning was on Sportsnet 650 talking about Loui Eriksson, their salary cap situation, Brock Boeser, and a first round draft pick
Sportsnet 650: Benning on forward Loui Eriksson: “I had conversations with Loui. At one point in the summer we had conversations with teams to see if there might be a fit for him somewhere – it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen now.”
Sportsnet 650: Benning on their salary cap situation: “We have daily meetings with our capologist. We have plans for two or three years out, you can never tell where the cap will be in three or four years but we have a plan in place where it will all work out.”
Sportsnet 650: Benning on restricted free agent Brock Boeser and other RFAs: “I’ve had good conversations with Brock’s agent. I can’t speak to what other teams are doing, we’ve had good conversations and we’re hoping we can get him for the start of training camp.”
Sportsnet 650: Benning on trading a first round pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward J.T. Miller: “There’s a chance at the deadline that we may move a player to recoup that first round pick. I don’t like trading first round picks, I’ve never done it before but we had to make the move to make our team better”
No new extension talks between the Boston Bruins and Torey Krug
Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now: Boston Bruins defenseman Torey Krug has a year left on his contract. A source said that there haven’t been any new contract extension talks between the two sides.
The Bruins still need to re-sign RFA defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo for this year, and they only have around $7.2 million in cap space. It’s hard to determine what kind of cap space they’ll have for 2020-21.
Some scouts and managers think Krug could get upwards of $9 million on a seven- or eight-year deal.
