The Lightning finally moved
TSN: Pierre LeBrun: The Tampa Bay Lightning had been trying to hold strong on a three-year deal at under $5.7 million for Brayden Point. He was never going to sign that. The last year at $9 million was key. He’ll be a $10 million-plus player on his next deal.
NHL and NHLPA working towards an extension
TSN: Pierre LeBrun: After both the NHL and NHLPA opted to not opt-out of the CBA, the sides want to keep working towards a CBA extension.
“Well they’re meeting again this week. Both sides want to keep that momentum going. I’m not saying it’s imminent, I still think there’s lots of work in the few months ahead in this discussion but they’re back at it.”
Jets have to hold tight for now
TSN: Darren Dreger: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has to hold tight and wait for a Dustin Byfuglien decision. He’s suspended and could be for a while. The Jets are talking to teams about potential trades, but it’s hard for them to do anything at this time.
Ristolainen could remain with the Sabres for now
Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres defenseman Brandon Montour has an injured hand. Trade speculation follows Rasmus Ristolainen, but he may start the season with the Sabres.
The Winnipeg Jets blue line could look real thin if Dustin Byfuglien retires, hence the link to Ristolain.
Benning could be the odd man out in Edmonton
Allan Mitchell of The Athletic: The Edmonton Oilers have too many defensemen and GM Ken Holland could look at moving one or more of them.
Matt Benning could be the odd man out with his preseason struggles and a group of young right-handed defensemen lurking.
Benning will be an RFA after the season and comes in at $1.9 million this season.
Could they move Benning for a third-line center? He might end of being a trade deadline rental.
