NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, and the Philadelphia Flyers

The Canucks have been looking to make a move for months

Sportsnet 650: Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet 650 on Tuesday on the Vancouver Canucks: “The #Canucks aren’t the only team in this situation. I know Buffalo would like to make a move. The problem is nobody has space. I think there are a bunch of teams out there that would like to make moves but there’s not a lot of flexibility”

Sportsnet 650: Friedman continued: “The other thing is everybody knows where the #Canucks are. They’ve been trying to move a body for months. When you’re in that situation, these guys aren’t helping you, they’re not throwing you life preservers, they’re throwing you anvils.”

Sportsnet 650: Friedman continued:  “At some point if the #Canucks have to, they’ll either have to send someone down or they’ll move somebody out and they’ll have to do something to make it happen. But you’re not dealing from a position of strength and it doesn’t make it easy.”

The Canucks had been previously interested in Barrie

James (@Account4hockey): Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet 590: “There were rumours, I don’t know if they were true, but if VAN had traded for Tyson Barrie, they would have extended him at a big number. The number floated out there was 8×8. (I think VAN would have to wait until the trade deadline to offer 8 years)”

The Flyers should be interested in Gaudreau if he becomes available

Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The rumor mill has the Calgary Flames possibly making Johnny Gaudreau available at some point.

Gaudreau has roots in South Jersey and has said that he wouldn’t mind playing for the Philadelphia Flyers someday. The Flyers are a team that could use a change to their current core.

He carries a reasonable $6.75 million salary cap hit through 2021-22.

The acquisition cost would be really high but he’s worth giving up some high draft picks. The Flyers would need to send some salary back – maybe Jakub Voracek‘s $8.25 million cap hit through 2023-24. James van Riemsdyk and his $7 million through 2022-23 could be another option.

The Flyers would have to include a couple of draft picks and likely take back more salary if Voracek is included.
