QUEBEC – Vasily Ponomarev broke a 3-3 tie at 16:46 of the third period, and the Shawinigan Cataractes held on to defeat the Victoriaville Tigres 4-3 on Monday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
Antoine Coulombe kicked out 37-of-40 shots including all 18 his way in the third to help Shawinigan halt a three-game slide.
Xavier Bourgault, Xavier Cormier and Anthony DiCesare also found the back of the net for the Cataractes (4-3-1).
Conor Frenette, Edouard Ouellet and Alex DeGagne scored for the Tigres (5-3-0), who have lost back-to-back games inside the seven-team bubble playing a series of games at the Videotron Centre in an effort to complete a 60-game season during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nikolas Hurtubise made 22 saves for Victoriaville.
The series, which opened Nov. 21 and runs until Nov. 27, will see every team play six games — one against each of the other teams. Many of the QMJHL’s Quebec-based teams have had their 2020-21 campaign impacted by COVID-19, leading to games being suspended and rescheduled.
