Luke Prokop, a 19-year-old Canadian and Nashville Predators prospect, has come out as gay before his first NHL camp.
Prokop was a third-round pick in the 2020 draft last fall and posted a message to Twitter on Monday saying he’s intent on leading an “authentic life”.
No active NHL player has come out as gay. Carl Nassib of the Las Vegas Raiders became the first openly gay NFL player in June.
Prokop said he hopes his example shows that gay people are welcome in the hockey community.
Many of Prokop’s peers in the NHL, the greater hockey community and thousands of others shared their support on social media.
