Toronto Sceptres Earn Fifth Straight Win, Defeat New York Sirens 4-1

The New York Sirens hosted the Toronto Sceptres on Wednesday, Feb. 19 for their fourth meeting of the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. The Sirens won the first two matchups, but the Sceptres were able to take the third. Toronto repeated their earlier success, earning a 4-1 victory.

The Sceptres have now won five straight games, while the Sirens have lost their fifth straight.

Game Recap

The Sceptres had major control of the puck in the first period, taking ten shots compared to the Sirens’ five. Neither team scored or drew a penalty. After some back and forth in the first 20 minutes, the period came to a close, scoreless.

Seven minutes into the second, Renata Fast took a shot on goal that was blocked by Corinne Schroeder. Daryl Watts recovered the rebound, but that shot bounced off the crossbar. Watts recovered the puck by the boards and passed to Izzy Daniel. She circled the ice, trying to find an opening. She saw Hannah Miller alone towards the center of the ice. She took a shot which bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net. Schroeder attempted to cover the puck, but it had already crossed the goal line. The Sceptres were the first team to get onto the scoreboard.

With 7:25 left in the second, the Sceptres earned their first power play of the night. Ella Shelton had to sit for an interference call. Just 36 seconds later, the Sceptres scored on the extra woman advantage. The Sirens tried to get the puck into their offensive zone, but Fast had other plans. She skated the puck back from one side of the ice to the Sceptres’ offensive zone. She sent it to Miller, who lost the puck but managed to gain control of it a moment later. She sent a pass to Watts who took a shot. Schroeder made the save but Julia Gosling was in front and recovered the rebound. She took a shot and put the Sceptres up 2-0.

With just under four minutes left in the second, the Sceptres earned their second power play chance of the night. Jamie Bourbonnais sat for cross-checking, and the Sirens went back on the penalty kill. The Sceptres could not capitalize on this second opportunity, and the game returned to 5-on-5.

Five minutes into the third period, the Sirens earned their first power play of the night. Emma Maltais sat for tripping, and the Sceptres went on the penalty kill. The Sceptres were able to kill the penalty, and immediately went back on the power play themselves. Jade Downie-Landry sat for hooking and the Sceptres were back on the power play. Once again, they were able to score. Watts was along the boards and sent a pass to Savannah Harmon at the blue line. She saw Miller next to her and passed the puck to her. She let it fly from the blue line, where it found the back of the net.

38 seconds after Miller’s second goal, the Sirens answered back. Sarah Fillier drove the puck back to New York’s offensive zone. She passed to Paetyn Levis, who was in front of the net. She tried to regain puck control and passed to Alex Carpenter. She took a shot and put the Sirens on the board with nine minutes left in the third period.

With 9:02 on the clock, Gabby Rosenthal went to the box after high-sticking Miller in the faceoff. The Sceptres were back on the power play and made quick work of the opportunity. Fast sent a pass to Miller by the blue line. She took a shot and Gosling tipped the puck into the net.

While the Sirens attempted to make a comeback, the Sceptres drew a penalty. Rylind MacKinnon was caught on a hooking call as she tried to stop Noora Tulus from scoring. Despite another 5-on-4 chance, the Sirens didn’t score on the power play again.

With three minutes left in the third, Fast earned a cross-checking penalty. The Sirens’ 5-on-4 did not last long, as Fillier was called for slashing. The 4-on-4 also did not last long, as Blayre Turnbull went to the box for slashing. The Sirens received a short 4-on-3 chance. Jessie Eldridge had a nice shot attempt but missed the net. The penalties dwindled and the time expired, earning the Sceptres the 4-1 win.

The Sceptres will look to extend their win streak when they take on the Minnesota Frost on Sunday, Feb. 23. The Sirens will also be back in action on Sunday when they take on the Boston Fleet in Buffalo as part of the PWHL Takeover Tour.
