The St. Louis Blues today announced that Jim Johnson has been named an associate coach with the San Antonio Rampage, joining head coach Drew Bannister’s staff for the 2019-20 season.
Johnson, who turns 57 on Friday, most recently spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers (2015-18). He has also served as an assistant with the San Jose Sharks (2012-15), Washington Capitals (2011-12) and Tampa Bay Lightning (2009-10). He began the 2009-10 season as an associate coach with the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals before being elevated to head coach on Jan. 16, 2010, and then promoted to assistant coach of the Lightning on Feb. 24.
In 2008-09, Johnson served as Tampa Bay’s player development coach, and previously spent four years with the Phoenix Coyotes as a consultant to the general manager, broadcast analyst and an assistant coach. Johnson has also worked with USA Hockey development programs and served as an assistant on the national junior team three times.
A native of New Hope, Minn., Johnson had a lengthy NHL career as a defenseman, playing 829 games with Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Dallas, Washington and Phoenix. He also represented the United States in international competition on seven occasions including the 1991 Canada Cup.
Johnson joins assistant coach Daniel Tkaczuk on the Rampage coaching staff, with Tkaczuk preparing for his second season behind the San Antonio bench.
