Vellucci adds GM duties with WBS Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Mike Vellucci has been named general manager of the club.

Vellucci, 52, will serve as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s head coach and GM. He takes over general manager duties from Bill Guerin, who joined the Minnesota Wild as their GM last week.

Vellucci spent the previous five seasons as the assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes, where he oversaw player development and scouting. During the past two seasons, Vellucci also served as the Charlotte Checkers’ head coach, compiling a record of 97-43-8-4 in 152 games.

In 2018-19, Vellucci guided the Checkers to a Calder Cup championship after registering the AHL’s best regular-season record (51-17-7-1). Vellucci was voted the recipient of the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding coach.
