The hockey world took to Twitter following the death of longtime Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk on Monday.
The team announced in a statement that the Toronto-born Melnyk had died “after an illness he faced with determination and courage.” Melnyk, who has owned the team since 2003, was 62 years old.
Senators captain Brady Tkachuk thanked Melnyk on Twitter.
The Twitter account of the Winnipeg Jets, who played against the Senators last week, also posted condolences and called Melnyk a “passionate competitor.”
The Jets were not the only team to issue a statement. Saint Louis Blues chairman Tom Stillman noted his “thoughts and prayers are with the Melnyk family.”
Premier Doug Ford tweeted Melnyk was a “fighter and a tenacious leader in sports and business.”
