The New York Rangers have traded forward Vladislav Namestnikov to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Nick Ebert and a 2021 4th round pick.

The Rangers are retaining 18.75 percent of Namestnikov’s salary.

The 26-year old Namestnikov was drafted 27th overall in the 1st round of the 2011 draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 25-year old Ebert was drafted 211th overall in the 7th round of the 2012 draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

NYR Setats & Info: “The Rangers now have nine picks in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft (NYR 1st, NYR 2nd, NYR 3rd, BUF 3rd, NYR 4th, OTT 4th, NYR 5th, NYR 6th, and NYR 7th).

The Blueshirts also currently have 18 picks over the next two years (2020 and 2021) in the NHL Entry Draft. ”

Thoughts from the media

NYR Setats & Info: Ebert, 25, skated in 49 games with Orebro of the SHL last season, registering 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points. He ranked third among SHL defensemen in goals, ranked fourth among SHL defensemen in points, and ranked fifth among SHL defensemen in assists in 2018-19.”

Renaud Lavoie: “The @NYRangers will get picks and a AHL player in return of Namestnikov. His salary ($4M) vs what he brings to the team explain why the Rangers decided to make the move. New start can help Namestnikov.”

Adam Gretz: “He went from skating next to Stamkos and Kucherov to getting passed around to different rebuilding teams in a short period of time.”

Adam Gretz: “Also why is Ottawa trading draft picks.”

Charlie O’Connor: “That Namestnikov trade is funny because it’s between Team That Claims To Want To Compete In 2019-20 & Team That Is Clearly Punting 2019-20… and it’s the latter team that is giving up future assets and the former that is selling a rental.”
