WHL Roundup: Nychuk scores second goal in overtime to lead Wheat Kings over Ice

BRANDON, Man. – Chad Nychuk scored his second goal of the game 4:35 into overtime as the Brandon Wheat Kings edged the Winnipeg Ice 5-4 in Western Hockey League action Monday.

Nychuck also had an assist to give him a three-point night.

Nate Danielson and Vincent Iorio each had a goal and an assist and Brett Hyland also scored for Brandon, which trailed 3-1 early in the third period before a late comeback.

Mikey Milne had a goal and an assist for Winnipeg while Jakin Smallwood, Jack Finley and Conor Geekie also scored.

The Wheat Kings (16-13-2) improved their point streak to five games (4-0-1) and are 7-2-1 over their last six games and maintained a one-point lead on Saskatoon for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Despite the loss, the WHL-leading ice (25-5-2) increased their lead over Edmonton for top spot in the East after the Oil Kings fell 6-5 to the Regina Pats on Monday.

Both goaltenders had a heavy workload in the game. Ethan Kruger stopped 37 shots for Brandon, while Gage Alexander made 32 saves for Winnipeg.

PATS 6 OIL KINGS 5

REGINA — Leyton Feist had a goal and three assists to lead the Pats past Edmonton.

Brayden Barnett, Drew Englot, Braxton Whitehead, Tom Cadieux and Ryker Evans also scored for Regina (13-16-0).

Josh Williams had three goals and an assist and Jalen Luypen had two goals and two assists for Edmonton (22-7-3).

BLADES 4 RAIDERS 1

PRINCE ALBERT, SASK — Rowan Calvert scored the game-winning goal to lead Saskatoon over the Raiders.

Tanner Molendyk, Spencer Shugrue and Charlie Wright also scored for the Blades (16-13-1).

Landon Koslor scored for Prince Albert (12-15-2).

BRONCOS 4 HURRICANES 2

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — Josh Filmon’s hat trick led the Broncos over Lethbridge.

Brady Birnie also scored for Swift Current (12-15-4).

Logan Barlage and Trevor Thurston scored for the Hurricanes (12-12-2).

ROYALS 3 GIANTS 1

VANCOUVER — Brayden Schuurman scored two goals, including the game-winner on a power play, as Victoria defeated the Giants.

Bailey Peach also scored for the Royals (9-13-4).

Kaden Kohle scored for the Giants (14-13-1).
