WHL Roundup: Blazers extend win streak to five straight with 4-2 win over Rockets

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Logan Stankoven scored two goals as the Kamloops Blazers (40-14-2) won their fifth in a row, downing the visiting Kelowna Rockets 4-2 Friday in WHL action.

Stankoven’s second goal at about two minutes into the third period proved to be the game-winner.

Andrew Cristall and Adam Kydd scored for the Rockets (34-15-4), who lost for just the third time in their last 10 contests.

Kelowna goalie Talyn Boyko made 33 stops while Blazers netminder Dylan Garand faced just 26 shots.

These two teams will meet again Saturday night in Kamloops.

BRANDON, Man. — Benjamin Zloty scored and assisted on two other goals as Winnipeg (38-9-5) topped Brandon (28-19-5). Starting with a Zachary Benson goal at the 18:23 mark of the second period, the Ice scored five unanswered goals to finish the game.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Jagger Firkus had a goal and an assist as Moose Jaw (32-19-5) eased past Calgary (20-27-8). Hitmen goalie Ethan Buenaventura made 33 saves in defeat.

PATS 4 HURRICANES 3

REGINA — Connor Bedard and Braxton Whitehead each had a goal and an assist to lead Regina (21-27-4) past Lethbridge (23-27-4). The Hurricanes’ Nolan Bentham managed to tie the game up 3-3 at the 7:35 mark of the third period, but the Whitehead goal at the 15:30 mark ensured the Pats’ victory.

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Egor Sidorov scored the game-winner in overtime as Saskatoon (32-18-4) edged out Prince Albert (22-28-4). Blades forward Brandon Lisowsky scored midway through the third period to send the game into O-T.

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — Jalen Luypen’s two goals paced Edmonton (43-11-3) to its 13th win in a row. Owen Pickering scored Swift Current’s (20-29-7) only goal in the game.

REBELS 6 TIGERS 3

RED DEER, Alta. — Ben King racked up four assists as part of a five-point night as Red Deer (37-16-3) defeated Medicine Hat (10-40-4). Logan Barlage scored and assisted in the Tigers loss.

SILVERTIPS 6 CHIEFS 3

EVERETT, Wash. — Niko Huuhtanen scored two goals and assisted on one as Everett (37-9-8) downed Spokane (18-32-5). Silvertips goalie Braden Holt stopped 30 of the 33 shots he was peppered with in the win.

ROYALS 5 COUGARS 3

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Four different Victoria (17-33-6) skaters recorded a goal and an assist in their victory over Prince George (19-32-3). Matthew Hodson, Tarun Fizer, Caleb Willms and Anthony Wilson all enjoyed two-point nights for the Royals. The Cougars have now lost seven straight.

WINTERHAWKS 3 THUNDERBIRDS 2 (SO)

KENT, Wash. — Taylor Gauthier made 51 saves and held out long enough in the shootout to allow Portland (38-14-5) to walk away with a victory over Seattle (34-14-6). Taylor’s Thunderbirds counterpart Thomas Milic faced only 28 shots on the evening.

GIANTS 3 AMERICANS 2

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Jaden Lipinski scored twice to lead Vancouver (21-29-3) over Tri-City (15-34-5). Giants winger Fabian Lysell scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left to play.
