Ralfs Bergmanis had a hat trick and Latvia beat Czechia 5-2 on Sunday to secure a quarter-final spot in the world junior championship. Latvia (1-2-1) was third in Group A, a spot ahead of Czechia (1-2-1). Latvia got into the event when Russia and Belarus were expelled. Hockey Québec says it’s launching an independent investigation into allegations of racism in Outaouais minor hockey, and that accused players who had been suspended can rejoin their teams while the investigation is ongoing. The lawyer for a Russian goalie who was NHL-bound before being abruptly detained outside a St. Petersburg hockey rink in July asked a court in the Leningrad region Thursday to revoke a decision by the draft board that led to the player being forced into the Russian military.  Ivan Fedotov, 25, signed an entry-level contract in May with the Philadelphia Flyers.
